Robert Joyce at Felixstowe Ferry

Robert, who followed Ian MacPherson as professional at the club was at West Essex for many years after a prolonged period playing on the tour.
He has transformed the professional shop, which also provides living accommodation for his assistant Peter, into an excellent golf shop with a fully-fledged teaching studio. The winters can be fairly cool with the North Sea just a few paces away from the shop, so it makes very good sense to be able to teach in a warm and dry environment. He stocks all of the latest brands and specialises in selling custom fitted golf equipment.  Drivers, fairway woods, rescues and sets of ions are all adjusted and prescribed for the customer's best golf. He also makes sure that the shortest stick, namely the patter is perfectly suited to the individual’s requirements.
The club, which added a golf range and a nine-hole course just over a decade ago, is busy and progressive. It has an historic links layout over 18 holes and regularly plays host to its famous Winter Series, involving low handicap amateurs and professionals throughout East Anglia in a once-a-month event held on the first Tuesday from October till March.

Robert, who is now in his early 50s spoke to Golf Features:

"I'm very proud and pleased to be the professional at Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club. It's much quieter than my last job, but there are so many things to get involved with here and it is a real pleasure to look after so many wonderful golfing enthusiasts. I have always been very interested in both teaching and selling specialised custom fit golf clubs. The studio gives me the perfect opportunity to do just that. We are busy most days with fittings and lessons and best of all, the weather and seasons don't disrupt our diary."
